Cost of Health Insurance expected to rise

The cost of health insurance in Ireland is expected to rise following the introduction of the new Health Insurance (Amendment Bill) published last week.  The Irish Times reported that this was the first time health status would be included as a measure of risk in the regulation of the insurance market. Up until now, the only factor considered was the age of a subscriber. It said that “healthier people face paying more for their health insurance as a result of new legislation to regulate the market.”

It also reported that the largest private insurer, Laya Healthcare, had criticised the use of hospital bed nights to incentivise the market, saying it would drive inefficiency and increase the cost of claims by encouraging patients to stay in hospital longer than necessary.
