Since 2001 the iFHP has held a CEO Forum in the intervening years when there is no Biennial Conference. These events have in the past taken place in London, Dublin, Montreal, Auckland, Amsterdam, Sydney, Zurich and Davos. In 2017 we will hold the CEO Forum in Boston.
Boston is an ancient and historic city, founded in 1630 – one of the oldest cities in the US – and a cradle of democracy. It played a key role in the American Revolution which liberated the former colonists from oppressive British rule: this is highlighted on the Freedom Trail, a 2.5-mile walking route of historic sites that tells the story of the nation’s founding. Politically Boston today, along with the State of Massachusetts of which it is the capital city, is a stronghold of the Democratic Party, central to the American liberal tradition, and of course home to the Kennedy dynasty.
Boston also plays host to many great educational institutions, of which Harvard University and MIT are the best known. Greater Boston contains more than 100 colleges and universities, with 250,000 students enrolled in Boston and Cambridge alone.
Not surprisingly, the City has a claim to be a leading, some would say premier, US cultural and artistic centre. Boston has been called the “Athens of America” for its literary history, earning a reputation as the intellectual capital of the United States. In the nineteenth century, Emerson, Thoreau, Lowell, and Longfellow, among many others wrote there. Some consider the Old Corner Bookstore, where these writers met and where The Atlantic Monthly was first published, to be the “cradle of American literature”.
Most significantly for our purposes, Boston is famed for its healthcare expertise and innovation, home to world renowned medical and research facilities, including Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women'’s Hospital, Children'’s Hospital Boston, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Harvard Medical School. Boston’s hospitals, universities, and research institutions received more than $1.77 billion in National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants in 2013, more than any other US metropolitan area.
